Immediate Dentures

Immediate Dentures

When extraction of all of your remaining teeth becomes necessary, Immediate Dentures provide a temporary solution to the problem of going without teeth once the extraction procedure is completed. When Immediate Dentures are recommended, your Denturist will take an impression of your teeth and gums prior to extraction. This impression will be used to create working models for the construction of your new dentures. When your natural teeth are extracted, your Immediate Dentures will then be inserted. With this technique, you will avoid having to go without any teeth while you go through the post-operative healing process.

As the healing process occurs, the oral tissue in your mouth (gums and bone) will shrink to a much smaller size due to the closing of the tooth sockets. This contraction of oral tissue may require you to have several adjustments made to your Immediate Dentures. Temporary liners or tissue conditioners may be required to ensure a comfortable fit. During the healing period, postoperative instructions from your Dental Surgeon and Denturist must be followed carefully. Regular check-ups and maintenance are required to ensure ideal healing.

Since your Denturist has no way of fitting in your Immediate Dentures prior to the extraction of your natural teeth, certain esthetic compromises may be necessary in favour of structural integrity. As healing continues the rate of change in oral tissue will decrease. This is a natural process and when healing is complete either a new set of dentures can be constructed or your Immediate Dentures can be relined and/or rebased. Final outcomes to this procedure are quite good leaving you with a comfortably fitting set of permanent dentures that will enhance your oral health and appearance.

Talk to your Denturist before you see your Dentist about complete extraction. He/she will be happy to make sure your oral health is not compromised after your teeth are extracted. Your Denturist will consult with you and recommend the options that best meet your needs before you undergo complete extraction of your remaining teeth.
